This guide compares seven Japanese people movers on which grades really seat eight, what the 8-seat cabin changes for child seats and luggage, and the fuel, size and access figures from each maker's Japanese catalogue.

Which Japanese people movers seat eight?

• Nissan Serena C27 S-Hybrid: eight seats on all main grades, including the GNC27 4WD. The C27 e-POWER seats seven only.

• Toyota Noah: on the 2014–2021 80 series, only the petrol (ZRR80) offered eight seats; the hybrid was seven only. The current ZWR90W hybrid seats eight on 2WD S-G and S-X grades.

• Toyota Voxy: same pattern as the Noah; the current hybrid S-G 2WD is the eight-seat option.

• Toyota Alphard AYH30 hybrid: eight seats only on the X grade, and the X was also sold as a seven-seater, so the individual car must be checked.

• Toyota Vellfire AYH30 hybrid: mirrors the Alphard; X grade only, in both seat counts.

• Toyota Estima AHR20W hybrid: eight seats on Aeras and X grades (post-2016, the Aeras).

• Honda Odyssey RC4 hybrid: eight seats on the Hybrid, Hybrid Advanced and Hybrid Absolute Honda Sensing grades; the EX trims are seven only.

8 seats or 7: what changes in the cabin?

The seventh and eighth seats come from the second row. An 8-seat grade uses a split bench that tips and slides; a 7-seat grade uses two captain's chairs with an aisle between them. The bench carries three people and lets a parent sit between two child seats. The captain's chairs are more comfortable for two and the aisle gives walk-through access to the third row without moving a seat.

Child-seat anchor points decide where restraints can go. On the Alphard and Vellfire, Toyota's equipment lists show ISOFIX mounts and top-tether anchorages on the second-row outer seats only; the third row has seatbelts but no factory anchor points. Every Australian child restraint needs its top tether attached, so check the owner's manual for which rows carry factory anchorages before planning three seats across.

The Alphard X against the G shows the trade: the X's 6:4 bench tips forward for third-row entry and seats eight, while the G's captain's chairs slide up to 830 mm and seat seven. Boot space behind the third row also differs by model: the Estima and Odyssey fold their third rows flat into the floor, while the Serena, Noah, Voxy, Alphard and Vellfire fold theirs upward to the sides, which narrows the boot opening when stowed.

Toyota Noah

Toyota Noah ZWR90W hybrid

The Noah is the sensible mid-size choice. On the 80 series, an eight-seat Noah means the 2.0L petrol; the hybrid of that generation seats seven. The current ZWR90W changes that: the hybrid S-G and S-X seat eight on 2WD, with a 745 mm sliding third row and WLTC fuel use of 4.2 L/100km. Toyota Voxy

Toyota Voxy ZWR80 hybrid

The Voxy is the Noah's twin with sportier trim, and the same seat rule applies: 80-series hybrids seat seven, 80-series petrols offer eight, and the current hybrid S-G 2WD seats eight. The ZS aero body of the 80 series is 1,730 mm wide against the standard car's 1,695 mm, which matters in a narrow carport. Toyota Alphard

Toyota Alphard AYH30 hybrid

The Alphard is the comfort pick, but the eight-seat hybrid is the X grade alone, and the X also exists as a seven-seater, so confirm the seat count on the car, not the badge. The X's 6:4 bench tips and slides 720 mm; higher grades get captain's chairs and seat seven. Two cautions: dual power doors were optional on the X, and factory child-seat anchorages sit on the second-row outer seats only. Toyota Vellfire

Toyota Vellfire AYH30 hybrid

The Vellfire shares the Alphard's platform, hybrid system and seat layouts behind a squarer face. The same rule holds: the hybrid X is the eight-seat grade, sold in both seven- and eight-seat forms, with E-Four drive standard and 5.2 L/100km on the JC08 cycle for the X. Because it wears the less famous badge, a Vellfire often lists slightly cheaper than the equivalent Alphard. Who it suits: the Alphard buyer who prefers the styling or the price. Toyota Estima

Toyota Estima AHR20W hybrid

The Estima hybrid ran from 2006 to 2019 on one platform, so late cars are a known quantity. Eight seats come on the Aeras and X grades, every hybrid is E-Four, and the maker's JC08 figure is 5.6 L/100km. Its party trick is the third row folding flat into the floor, leaving a long, flat boot the side-stow vans cannot match. At 1,760 mm tall it also clears doors the Alphard will not. Nissan Serena and Honda Odyssey

Nissan Serena C27 S-Hybrid

The Serena C27 is the easiest path to eight seats: the S-Hybrid seats eight on all main grades, including the GNC27 4WD, and it dominates the local 8-seater stock. The catch is the powertrain split - the efficient e-POWER (3.8 L/100km JC08) seats seven only, so an eight-seat Serena is the 2.0L S-Hybrid at 5.8 L/100km. Honda Odyssey

Honda Odyssey RC4 hybrid

The Odyssey RC4 hybrid is the low-rider of the group: 1,695 mm tall with a third row that folds flat under the floor. Honda's price lists show eight-seat versions of the Hybrid, Hybrid Advanced and Hybrid Absolute Honda Sensing grades; only the EX trims are seven-seat. The hybrid is front-wheel drive only. 8-seat SUV or people mover?

The SUVs usually raised in this conversation mostly do not seat eight in Australian specification. The Mazda CX-90 (diesel, 5.4 L/100km, AWD) seats six or seven. The Toyota Kluger (petrol, 8.3 L/100km, FWD) seats seven. The Nissan Patrol is the exception: the Ti grade seats eight, with a 5.6L petrol V8, 4WD and an official 14.4 L/100km.

Against a people mover, the Patrol gives up the sliding doors and the low floor: a people mover's doors open full-height in a tight carpark and its third row sits at a child-friendly step height, while using roughly half the fuel. The SUV answer is towing and off-road ability. If the third row is used weekly, the people mover is the better tool; if the eight-seat need is occasional and the towbar is not, the Patrol argument strengthens. What to check in the third row and the boot

• Seat count on the compliance plate. The plate states the seating capacity the car is complied for; it must say eight, whatever the grade badge implies.

• Third-row legroom. Sit in it. Models with sliding third rows (Serena, current Noah and Voxy) trade boot depth for legroom.

• Boot space behind row three. Side-stow vans lose width when the seats are folded up; the Estima and Odyssey keep a flat floor. Measure your pram against the car before committing.

• Child-seat anchorages. Australian restraints need a top tether. The owner's manual lists which positions carry factory anchor points; on the Alphard and Vellfire they are second-row outer seats only.

• Door motors. Run every powered door through a full cycle from the key, the B-pillar switch and the handle. Dual power doors were optional on several grades, so a left-door-only car is common.

• Hybrid battery report. Ask for the battery health check on any hybrid and the auction sheet on any import.

• Roof height against the garage. An Alphard or Vellfire is 1,950 mm tall; an Estima is 1,760 mm and an Odyssey 1,695 mm. Measure the door, not the memory of it.
