Why Carbarn Is Different

After your deposit, a Carbarn inspector goes to your exact car in Japan and sends real photos to your WhatsApp — before any bid is placed. You see the underbody, the hidden repairs, the real condition. You decide: bid or skip. Around that, we filter every vehicle for Australian import eligibility and show landed, complied pricing in AUD. You confirm. Then we bid.

Our biggest difference

Real inspection photos to your WhatsApp — before we bid

Auction photos are taken to sell the car. Our inspector photographs what they never show: underbody, rust, hidden repairs, interior condition. Don't like what we find? Skip — your deposit is refunded, or moves to your next car.

A Simple Five-Step Auction Buying Process

Choose an eligible auction car, enter your Bid in JPY, review the estimated landed and complied cost in AUD, place your bid deposit, and let Carbarn check the vehicle before final bid submission. No live bidding wars and no pressure — a clear, step-by-step process from deposit to result.

  1. Step 01

    Choose an eligible auction vehicle

  2. Step 02

Japan-Side Physical Inspection and Extra Photos

Auction photos and auction grades are useful, but they do not always show every defect. After your deposit, a Carbarn inspector attends the car at the auction house and sends real photos — underbody, paint, interior — before any final bid is submitted.

Estimated Landed and Complied Cost Before You Bid

Carbarn shows an estimated landed and complied cost in AUD so customers can understand the approximate total import cost before bidding. If the Bid in JPY field is empty, the estimate uses Carbarn's benchmark. If the customer enters a Bid in JPY, the estimate updates live.

Background for Australian buyers bidding in Japan

Bid on Japanese Auction Cars That Can Be Imported to Australia

This page is designed for buyers who want to bid on vehicles in Japan auctions and bring them to Australia. Carbarn does not show every auction vehicle from Japan. The feed is filtered so customers see vehicles that match Australian import eligibility rules or need only limited confirmation before proceeding.

Why Import Eligibility Comes First

Not every Japanese auction car can be imported to Australia. Model code, build month, vehicle type, pathway and compliance rules matter before a bid is placed. Carbarn's system is designed to filter vehicles against Australian import eligibility before they are shown to customers.

Bid Deposit and Auction Result

A deposit is required before Carbarn proceeds with a bid instruction. If the customer does not win the auction, the deposit can be made available for another auction vehicle or refunded according to Carbarn's process.

Place a Bid Deposit with a Controlled Review Process

After reviewing the vehicle and cost breakdown, the customer can place a bid deposit to secure the next step. Carbarn then checks the final vehicle details, auction sheet, import eligibility and available inspection/photo findings before final bid submission. If the vehicle should not proceed, the deposit can be moved to another suitable auction vehicle or refunded according to Carbarn policy and payment method rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Carbarn only shows vehicles that match Australian import eligibility rules or vehicles that can be reviewed before proceeding. Model code, build month, vehicle type and compliance pathway all matter before a vehicle can be imported.

Eligibility

Can every Japanese auction car be imported to Australia?

No. Carbarn only shows vehicles that match Australian import eligibility rules or vehicles that can be reviewed before proceeding. Model code, build month, vehicle type and compliance pathway all matter before a vehicle can be imported.

What does Australia Import Eligible mean?

It means the vehicle has been matched to Australian import eligibility rules based on available data such as model code, build date, vehicle type and import pathway. Carbarn still checks auction sheet, photos and available vehicle information before final bid submission.

Why are model code and build month important?

Australian import eligibility can depend on exact model code and build month. If build month is not available from the initial auction data but the vehicle strongly matches a Carbarn import pathway, Carbarn can still accept a bid deposit and manually confirm the final eligibility before bid submission.

Why does Carbarn not show every vehicle from Japan auctions?

Showing every Japan auction vehicle would create confusion because many vehicles cannot be imported to Australia. Carbarn focuses on vehicles that match Australian import rules so customers spend time on realistic options.

Auction Bidding

What does Bid in JPY mean?

Bid in JPY is the amount the customer authorises Carbarn to bid up to in Japanese yen. The vehicle may sell for less than the entered bid. If that happens, the final calculation should use the actual winning price.

Can I enter a bid before opening the vehicle detail page?

Yes. The auction card can include a quick Bid in JPY field so the estimated landed price updates immediately. The customer should still open the vehicle and cost breakdown before proceeding with deposit.

What happens after I place a bid deposit?

After deposit, the vehicle appears in your bid portal. Carbarn reviews the auction sheet, photos, condition notes and import eligibility, and a Japan-side inspector photographs the car. The final bid is only submitted after these checks are done and you confirm.

Can I increase my bid before the auction?

Yes, if there is enough time before final bid submission. Increasing the bid can improve the chance of securing the vehicle, but the auction result is never guaranteed.

What happens if I do not win the auction?

If the vehicle is not won, the deposit can become available for another auction vehicle or the customer can request a refund according to Carbarn's process.

Physical Inspection and Vehicle Condition

Why does Carbarn check auction sheet and photos before bidding?

Auction grades and auction photos are useful, but they do not show every detail. Carbarn checks the auction sheet, photos and available condition information to reduce the risk of missed scratches, dents, paint issues, interior wear or other concerns.

Does Carbarn provide Japan-side physical inspection photos?

Yes. Your bid deposit starts a Japan-side inspection — a Carbarn inspector attends the car and sends real photos over WhatsApp before any final bid is submitted.

Can a Grade 3 or 3.5 auction vehicle still have hidden issues?

Yes. A Grade 3 or 3.5 vehicle can have visible wear, scratches, dents, paint marks or other condition issues. Carbarn's Japan-side check helps identify these issues before the bid is finalised where inspection is available.

What happens if Carbarn finds an issue after my deposit?

If Carbarn finds a significant eligibility, condition or data issue after deposit and before final bid submission, Carbarn contacts the customer. The deposit can be moved to another suitable auction vehicle or refunded according to Carbarn policy and payment method rules.

Pricing and Estimated Landed Cost

How is the estimated landed and complied price calculated?

The estimate uses the auction bid or Carbarn benchmark bid, exchange rate, Japan/export costs, shipping and logistics, import charges, GST, LCT where applicable, compliance and other expected cost inputs.

Is the estimated landed price always 100% final?

No. The estimate can change because auction result, actual winning price, JPY/AUD exchange rate, shipping, port charges, customs/GST/LCT assessment, compliance requirements and third-party invoices can change.

How does Carbarn keep pricing estimates accurate?

Carbarn imports close to 1,000 vehicles per year and regularly updates cost assumptions from real import, shipping, compliance and customs outcomes. These updates help improve the estimate over time.

Can war, conflict or logistics disruption change import costs?

Yes. Shipping delays, port congestion, route changes, war, conflict, fuel surcharges and logistics disruptions can increase costs or delay timelines. These factors are outside Carbarn's control.

Can exchange rate movement change the final cost?

Yes. The Japanese yen and Australian dollar exchange rate can move between estimate, bid, invoice and payment stages. This can change the final AUD cost.

Can Luxury Car Tax change the final cost?

Yes. If the vehicle's bid price, exchange rate or assessed value moves above the LCT threshold, LCT can apply or increase. This is especially important for higher-value vehicles close to the threshold.

Does the estimate include registration, CTP, stamp duty and insurance?

No. Registration, CTP, stamp duty, insurance, number plates and optional accessories are extra unless specifically stated.

Deposit

How is the auction deposit calculated?

The deposit amount is based on the vehicle and your target bid, and is shown on the vehicle detail page before you proceed. It is refundable if Carbarn does not submit a bid, if your bid is unsuccessful, or if the vehicle does not proceed after review — or you can move it to another auction vehicle instead. Contact Carbarn if you have questions about your specific deposit.

Can my deposit be used for another auction vehicle?

Yes. If the customer does not win an auction, the deposit can be made available for another suitable auction vehicle or refunded according to Carbarn's process.

Why is a deposit required before bidding?

The deposit is what starts the real work on your car: a Carbarn inspector attends it in Japan, we review the auction sheet and photos, and we share the findings with you — all before any final bid. It also confirms your intent to proceed, and it stays refundable or reusable if the bid doesn't go ahead.
